Sporty Girls

My Thoughts…

I really want to encourage girls to stay in some form of sport or activity. Sport has so many positive benefits. For me training is a healing activity. I have the time to think while running or swimming laps of a pool or running around an athletics stadium. Or I can totally forget about everything and just have fun! Sport is such a social activity; I’ve met so many new friends that have the same interests in me. I also like feeling fit.

Read the research highlights below on why sport is so important for girls and women. I want to encourage every girl to get out there and play a sport, no matter what anyone says or thinks. There is so much to sport. Success is having fun, being active, making friends, being part of a team. Find one that you enjoy and stick with it.

Girls in Sports

Why is sport so important for girls…

By my age, many girls are dropping out of sports, at two times the rate of boys (WomensSportsFoundation.org). Research done by EY in 2014 shows the link between careers and sport participation for women. Read the research here.

The research showed 74% agree that a background in sport can help accelerate a woman’s leadership and career potential. 61% say that past sporting involvement has contributed to their current career success.

The top areas where sport has played a significant role in developing or improving leadership skills are:

  • seeing projects through to completion
  • motivational skills; and team building
  • with a competitive spirit seen as essential for success on the playing field, 74% highlight that being described as “competitive” is considered an asset to their leadership style
  • candidates with a background of sporting achievement are seen as demonstrating the strong work ethic required to succeed in business (48%)
  • 70% agree, “women who have played sport often make good employees”
